Trumpeldor, Joseph
(1880-1920)
   Palestinian soldier. He was born in Pyatigorsk in the northern Caucasus. He volunteered for the Russian army and became an officer. In 1912 he moved to Palestine, where he attempted to found a co-operative agricultural settlement. In Egypt during World War I he and Vladimir Jabotinsky tried to establish a Jewish unit to fight against the Turks in Palestine. In 1917 Trumpeldor went to Russia to organize Jewish groups who would settle in Palestine. Two years later he returned to Palestine as leader of a pioneer group and organized volunteers to protect Jewish settlements in Upper Galilee.
